This Week Speaker - Dave Lambert
David Lambert - President of the Denver Lions Foundation

It is often mistakenly believed that charitable foundations and their activities are unimportant and of little consequence to a country’s economic system, but nothing could be further from the truth. In reality, charitable foundations make a vital contribution to the economic, social and political sectors of a nation. This week, we are lucky to learn everything the Denver Lions Foundation does, and more! President Dave Lambert will be presenting the foundation's annual report to the club. The Denver Lions Foundation is how the Club funds all the great service projects.  Without the Foundation we would not be able to do much service.

Last week's speaker...
Congresswoman DeGette

We hear so much about how congress does not work and there is not cooperation between parties. Congresswoman DeGette outlined many bills that did get passed with bipartisan support. One of the bipartisan bills being worked on is the 21st Century Cure. This will give NIH long term support to work on diseases that take more than a year to find a cure.

She commented the house calls the senate the Cave of the Winds.

The Blind Cafe Dining Experience
The Denver Den is hosting a Blind Cafe Dining Experience November 10th!

The Blind Cafe is a fiscally sponsored positive social change organization, that uses the concept of darkness to create an innovative and imaginative event held entirely in the pitch dark. Events are facilitated by professional trained “legally blind staff'' and designed to change the way you 'see' the world. The program is a concert, discussion & dinner in the dark, no blindfolds! It’s a community experience where people connect, learn and break bread together without their visual conditioning, social etiquette and cell phones. The darkness breaks down a lot of social barriers as everyone has a collected experience without being seen.

The educational component of the experience, starts with a Tibetan singing bowl being rung to bring everyone’s attention together. The audience is taught to participate in an ‘active listening experience’ where they learn to listen and engage as a group. This is the blind awareness component of the event, where the legally blind waitstaff (or ambassadors) share their personal stories about their blindness and the audience is engaged in a question and answer forum. This is the heart to heart experience in the dark where people ask questions they would never ask in a lighted setting.

This is a Education, Recruitment & Outreach event to kick-off all the projects we will be taking on during our Centennial year. We ask that Lions who wants to attend invite/bring a guest who could be a potential member.  Tickets are for sale online only at www.denverlions.org

For questions and reservations, please contact Jenny Pool Radway at jpoolradway@gmail.com

We hope you'll help us make this event a success!

Creating a More Welcoming Den

An important aspect of being welcoming, is getting to know someone

Do you have a good way to get to know someone new without just talking about your job and where you are from? We all know it’s best to avoid talking about politics and religion. Usually you are just looking for a pleasant way to pass the time and maybe to find a new friend. The best way to really get to know someone is to learn what they do (with their spare time) and what they like (probably also shows up in what they do). So, in order to help facilitate the process of getting to know each other more, we'll be including in the Roarings each week some new ideas for topics or questions to discuss at lunch. Be ready with your own answers too!

Topics/Questions for this week:

If you could invite four famous people to dinner, who would you choose and why?

If you had a time machine that would work only once, what point in the future or in history would you visit?

If you were a vegetable, what vegetable would you be?

Hurricane Matthew & Lions Clubs International Foundation
Hurricane Matthew affected several areas, including the Caribbean and the United States. It was the deadliest hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean since 2005.  Many main roads are impassible and many bridges have been washed away. Food and drinking water are in short supply and many of those who need aid the most are still waiting for it to arrive. When disaster strikes, Lions are among the first to offer help to the victims, even though they are often victims themselves. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is right there beside them, ready to support their efforts with funding assistance through Lions disaster relief programs. Working together, LCIF, local Lions and Lions leaders assess the urgent needs and quickly deliver the aid most required by victims.

The situation is dire, but Lions are working to bring hope to their neighbors. You can show your support for Lions and their work by making a donation to LCIF's disaster relief fund today.
