This week speaker: Kent Drotar

Kent Drotar is the Outreach Director for the Wild Animal Sanctuary. The high plains of eastern Colorado would seem an unlikely place to hear the roar of African lions, the growls of Kodiak bears, or the snarling of Bengal tigers. But a refuge in the small town of Keenesburg has brought together one of the largest and most unusual collections of wild predators anywhere in the country, possibly the world.

Stretching across 720 acres 30 miles northeast of Denver, the privately run Wild Animal Sanctuary hosts a staggering menagerie of wildlife—nearly 400 animals, most of them large carnivores rescued from illegal or inhumane captivity. There are black bears and grizzlies, African lions and American bobcats, Siberian lynxes and South American jaguars.

Recycle for Sight

Denver Lions your help is needed! Our community outreach event this year is RECYCLE FOR SIGHT on the 16th Street Mall on Tuesday April 11th.  Instead of our normal meeting we will be collecting glasses for recycling. We will set up three collection locations on the Mall.  We will still have a buffet lunch while you help out.

As important as collecting glasses on April 11th, is telling the public to bring the used eye glasses.  We need a lot of Lions on Friday April 7 to pass out flyers.  This flyer is a way to tell everyone to bring eyeglass to work the next Tuesday to donate.  We will also pass out flyers in the office buildings and to the merchants in the area.  The flyer not only tells about the event but also promotes Lions.

We will need a lot of Lions on Friday April 7.  We will have a late morning and early afternoon shift for about two hours.

Mark your calendars for April 7 and 11.

We are trying new ideas for our community outreach and this is one of them.
Special Olympics Colorado by Ethan Schwarz, Littleton High School Leo Club

Special Olympics was a blast! It took place at Copper Mountain on Sunday, March 5. We in the Littleton High School Leo Club really wanted to help out at this event because many of us are very passionate about skiing and we thought that this would be the perfect way to give back to the skiing community.

The event consisted of three different race courses: one for beginners, one for intermediate skiers and one advanced course. There was a great turnout of volunteers to help out all over the mountain. After our morning meeting we were sent to different race courses to help escort the athletes to the base after the race and deliver their scores.

When we were waiting at the bottom everyone was cheering each other on and having a good time. Even the people on the lift were hooting and hollering! It was such a fun and energetic environment.

After the races concluded there was an awards ceremony in a giant event room. Athletes were called up to the podium with the Olympic drums playing in the background and huge smiles on their faces. It was an amazing experience, and we can't wait till next year.

Littleton High School Leos that participated include: Lucas Ogilvie, Reed Wyatt, Alden Kramer, Reid Ervin, Zack Marquez, Duke Hindman, Nate Schwarz and Ethan Schwarz.

Lions Camp Work Day
Spring Cleanup at the camp is just around the corner!
Staff will start arriving May 28th and their first group of campers will be there on June 4th!
The camp needs our help! It takes a lot of volunteers to get the camp ready for the 380+ campers that will be attending this summer. There are jobs for everyone!
Bring new members, old members, family and friends!
Contact Jodi Franke and/or Michelle Werner for more information and let them know how many Lions will be coming with you to help.
