With the help of native Ethiopian/Lion Mel Tewahade, the Denver Lions Club International Missions Committee is planning an eyesight screening campaign in Ethiopia early in 2019. I’m reaching out to you to see whether you’d be interested in joining us.

Here are some key details:

  1. DATES:
    1. Overall: January 23 until February 16, 2019 (including flights to and from Ethiopia).
    2. Work dates: January 27-31; February 5-7.
  2. LOCATIONS to be visited: Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Simien National Park, Gondar, Ebinat*, Aksum, Shashamane*, Arba Minch* (* work sites).
  3. EXPENSES - best estimates:
    1. Airfare (depending on departure location and travel dates):
      1. International: $1,100
      2. Within Ethiopia: $270 (3 flights)
    2. Meals and Water: $460 ($20/day x 23 days)
    3. Transportation:
      1. Rental Car: $330 (10 days at $100/day at 3 people per car)
      2. Guide: $150 ($10 per day per person x 15 days)
    4. Hotels: $840 (21 days x $40 per day)
    5. Miscellaneous (taxis, airport transfers, tickets to tourism sites, T-shirt): $250
    6. Total: $3,400
Note that this estimate is based on 24 days (including international flight days); those of you who wish to arrive back home earlier than February 16 would certainly incur lower expenses for Meals, Hotels and Transportation.

Mel promises a good mix of humanitarian work and tourism. Right now we have 5 committed Lions volunteers and 2 others; we’d like to have  a total 12.

Thanks. Again, please let me know if you might have some interest, and I will put you (and anyone els who you think might be interested) on the email list for this and send some more details about the work and the tours. Also, please feel free call me at ANY time if you have ANY questions.
