The idea of placing one or more outdoor eyeglass drop boxes around Denver has been discussed among members of the Denver Lions Club for years.  The obvious reason is to collect eyeglasses, but equally important is to get the LIONs name out into the public.

Members have encountered boxes on their travels around the country. The Lion magazine has carried numerous stories of Clubs who have placed such boxes in their communities (some examples are shown below). Some Lions Clubs have been successful in obtaining used U.S. Postal Service mailboxes.  The Denver Postmaster General indicated to the Denver Den that excess mailboxes were not available. The Club considered large cardboard boxes that can be found at many Walmart optical centers. Club members built a prototype plywood box based on a Wisconsin Lions design.  Both cardboard and wood boxes would necessarily need to be inside reducing visibility and name publicity.

In November 2019, after getting quotes from two companies, the Club purchased a box from National Mailboxes of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.  The 14-gauge steel box measures 49x20x26 inches and cost $835 delivered.  Savio House agreed to paint the box with automotive paint.  Lion Brent Schuller printed decals based on modifications of Lions International recycle for sight posters. The First Baptist Church poured the concrete base and mounted the box on Grant Street about 100 yards south of the corner of West 14th Avenue.

Thanks to Lion Dwight Steen for his efforts on this project.
